Cathedral Notre Dame
A gem of Norman architecture
Situated in the heart of the old town, in the preserved historical sector, is the magnificent cathedral of Bayeux. Built during the 11th century, it was consecrated in 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror. After two fires partially destroyed the Romanesque building, it was rebuilt in the Gothic style. The stained glass windows and central tower were completed under the French Second Empire. The cathedral dominates the historical quarter of the city which was miraculously spared during the bombings of 1944 and thus retains a rich medieval heritage.
